Hot to Treat Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS)

Each person has two kidneys in their lower back. Each kidney is made up of approximately one million tiny filters called “glomeruli.”FSGS stands for Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis. It is a relatively common form of kidney disease. Although there are several known risk factors, we don’t yet know why most people develop FSGS. FSGS is diagnosed with renal biopsy, however, because only some sections of the glomeruli are affected, the biopsy can sometimes be inconclusive.

FSGS is not an easy disease to treat. Anyone with this disease should be seen regularly by a kidney specialist, also called a nephrologist. The goal of treatment is to control the symptoms of nephrotic syndrome and prevent chronic kidney failure. The treatments are as follows:

1.It is important for someone with either primary OR secondary FSGS to be on medication that reduces the amount of protein in the urine. These medications are called angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers. If urine protein levels are high, the complications of the Nephrotic Syndrome should also be considered. Patients should receive routine cholesterol screening/treatment.

2.Anti-inflammatory medicines to reduce the immune response.

3.Diuretics and low salt diet help to control edema.

4.Natural Treatment for FSGS.

5.Kidney Transplant.Patients do not have to be on dialysis to be eligible for a kidney transplant. Those with kidney function at or below 20% of normal may be referred.

6.Dialysis.Hemodialysis and Peritoneal dialysis.
